History and Guidelines

Shared Learning is a voluntary association of persons living in or near Chapel Hill, NC, who wish to continue learning by attending classes designed and conducted by fellow members, sometimes former professors or teachers,  as well as programs given by invited speakers.

History:  We  began in 1979 with a group of interested retirees who wanted to satisfy their intellectual curiosity and also be a forum for social contacts for persons who were newcomers.  From the initial 17 members our group has grown to almost 200 men and women who teach or attend courses in the humanities, sciences, and fine arts.

Social Times:  Opportunity is provided for members to gather for coffee and social chat before class and during break time.  At the end of each semester, a membership meeting and party is held for the members.

Membership is currently limited to 225 persons who share the objectives of this Association and pay the annual dues.

The fee for an individual joining at any time during the academic year is the annual fee.  Cost of books or supplies is modest and is sometimes specified in the course description provided to potential course participants.

Shared Learning is managed by a majority decision of the elected Board of Directors, comprised of a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, who are designated as officers, plus the five members serving as Curriculum Coordinator, Editor, Hospitality/Social Chairman, Librarian, Registrar, and two members at large.  In addition, the immediate Past President serves as a non-voting member of the board.
